The Medicines (Pharmacies) (Responsible Pharmacist) Regulations 2008 came into force on 1 October 2009.

Regulations for responsible pharmacists

Rebalancing project

The Departments of Health and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) have jointly initiated a programme to rebalance medicines legislation and pharmacy regulation across the UK.

The aim of the programme is to examine the respective scope of legislation and regulation, and the interface between them, with a view to ensuring that these are optimally designed to provide safety for users of pharmacy services while facilitating and reducing the barriers to responsible development of practice, innovation and a systematic approach to quality in pharmacy.

The consultation on the first phase of the rebalancing programme has now closed. The consultation included proposals for changes to the legislation for (a) dispensing errors and (b) registered pharmacy standards and related matters.

The closing date for responses was 14 May.
