Medical Device and Estates Safety (MDES) Section
...part of the SEES Branch, Health Estates Directorate (DoH).
The Medical Device and Estates Safety (MDES) section is part of the Sustainability, Engineering and Estate Safety Branch of Health Estates Directorate within the Department of Health providing professional engineering support to the Department on safety issues related to medical devices, estates infrastructure, plant and equipment.
MDES works closely with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the UK Competent Authority for Medical Devices for medical device safety and devolved partners in NHS England Estates and Facilities, Health Facilities Scotland and NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership for safety issues concerning estates non-medical equipment plant and building items.
The reporting and investigation of adverse events related to medical devices and the estate infrastructure will support improvement in the safety and quality of medical devices, estates and facilities.
Identified learning helps improve patient and staff safety across Northern Ireland and the UK. The MDES distributes regional and national generic learning, in the form of safety alerts and safety notices. These are distributed to the Health and Social Care Sector (HSC), private healthcare providers and the public via the web based Northern Ireland Central Alerting Systems (NICAS).
