    The Department of Health (DoH) has today published “Quarterly Carers’ Statistics for Northern Ireland (July – September 2023)”.

    This publication of quarterly figures relates to assessments and re-assessments offered to carers in Northern Ireland. A carers’ assessment looks at each carer as an individual with their own personal circumstances, and will identify any particular needs they may have as a result their caring duties.

    Please note that from next quarter (quarter October – December 2023) and going forward, these figures will be published in table format only, without accompanying PDF publication or press release. Publication dates will be added to the statistical release calendar 12 months prior to publication Statistical releases calendar | Department of Health (health-ni.gov.uk) .

    During quarter ending 30 September 2023:

    Carers Assessments

    A carers' assessment was offered to 3,647 carers in Northern Ireland during the quarter ending 30 September 2023. This represented a 5% (191) decrease on the number of assessments offered in the previous quarter, but a decrease of 2% when compared to the same quarter in 2022.

    • of the 3,647 carers’ assessments offered, 51% (1,865) were accepted / completed and 49% (1,782) were declined.

    • those carers caring for someone in the Family and Childcare / Children with Disabilities client groups were the most likely to accept an offer of an assessment, whereas those caring for someone in the Older People client group were most likely to decline an offer of an assessment.

    Carers Reassessments

    • a carers' reassessment was offered to 1,113 carers in Northern Ireland during the quarter ending 30 September 2023. This represents a 21% decrease on the number of reassessments offered in the previous quarter and a decrease of 17% when compared to the same quarter in 2022.

    • of the 1,113 carers’ reassessments offered, 85% (950) were accepted / completed and 15% (163) were declined.

    1. This information was collated by Community Information Branch within the DoH.

    2. A statistical release of carers’ information is published on a quarterly basis, however this is the last such release in the present format.  In future, tabular information only will be available directly from the DoH website.

    3. Statistics detailed within the bulletin are presented regionally and by Health and Social Care Trust in respect of carers’ assessments and reassessments that are offered, accepted / completed and declined; and are available by the client group of the person being cared for.

    4. Similar statistics relating to the quarter ending 30 December 2023 are due for release in March 2024.
