Transfer of the Controlled Drugs Accountable Officer role to the Department of Health following the closure of the Health and Social Care Board

From 1 April 2022 the Controlled Drugs Accountable Officer (CDAO) role will transfer from Joe Brogan, in the Regional Health and Social Care Board (HSCB) to Dr Lisa Byers, Senior Principal Pharmaceutical Officer in the Department of Health (DoH) who will be based in the Pharmaceutical Advice and Services Directorate, headed by the Chief Pharmaceutical Officer.
Following the closure of the HSCB, HSCB staff will be employed by the Business Services Organisation and situated in the Strategic Planning and Performance Group (SPPG) within DoH. The Pharmacy and Medicines Management team within SPPG will provide operational support to the DoH CDAO.
It is important to note that controlled drugs incidents will continue to be managed as per existing arrangements in accordance with the legislation and guidance. Therefore, at an operational level, there will be no change.
From 1 April 2022 all relevant notifications and correspondence, including occurrence reports, must be submitted to the DoH CDAO. A CDAO email box has been created for this purpose and will be subject to appropriate access controls in order to meet requirements of Data Protection law.
