Northern Ireland Regional Strategic Workforce Review – Pathology Services – June 2024
Date published:
The Northern Ireland Regional Strategic Workforce Review of Pathology Services is part of the ongoing suite of complementary transformation projects being taken forward by the Northern Ireland Pathology Network (hosted by the Department of Health’s Strategic Planning and Performance Group – SPPG), as set out in former Minister Swann’s Policy Statement in November 2021.
In April 2022, the Northern Ireland Pathology Network Board and the Department of Health commissioned the Northern Ireland Pathology Network to undertake a strategic regional review of the pathology workforce to inform HSC workforce development needs for the next three, five and ten years (i.e. the period 2024 - 2034).
The project was managed by a Review Board comprising key stakeholders and followed the six-step methodology set out in the Regional HSC Workforce Planning Framework. The final Report was endorsed by the Review Board and the wider Northern Ireland Pathology Network Board. The Minister has read and noted this Workforce Review Report.
A Pathology Workforce Review Implementation Board has been established to progress the recommendations arising from this strategic workforce review. Proceeding with recommendations requiring financial investment will be subject to future budget availability and implementation of those recommendations will therefore need to consider cost and deliverability implications.
