Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations in Northern Ireland

Date published: 08 August 2024

Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations and Guidance.

Details

In February 2018, regulations setting out a framework to protect patients from the hazards associated with medical exposure to ionising radiation came into force in Northern Ireland: the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2018. The regulations can be found on this page.

Guidance associated with the Regulations can also be accessed below on this page.

The guidance is intended to support all staff groups involved in medical and non-medical exposures, and to enhance patient safety when ionising radiation is used in the clinical setting. The guidance explains how the regulations should be interpreted in clinical practice in both the HSC and independent sector. It also extends to research laboratories, universities and sports facilities where medical and non-medical exposures are undertaken.

Please note - at present, Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IRMER) and guidance for Great Britain are being updated. However, these updates do not apply to Northern Ireland at present; the existing Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2018 and associated guidance continue to apply here.
