  • IGS Guidance - Section 21 of Modern Trafficking and Exploitation Act 2015

    Date published: 16 August 2023

The Independent Guardian Service (IGS) provides support to children and young people who have been trafficked or potentially trafficked. It also supports migrant children and young people arriving in Northern Ireland who are separated from an adult who has parental responsibility for them.

The IGS was set up under section 21 of the Human Trafficking and Exploitation (Criminal Justice and Support for Victims) Act (Northern Ireland) 2015 (with 2016 secondary legislation governing the appointment and supervision of Guardians). The Department of Health has developed the below Guidance on section 21 of the 2015 Act. It is designed to interpret, and provide information on the application of, the legislation, and is intended to be of use to the IGS and its commissioners.
