Key objectives from the Chief Allied Health Professions Officer’s 5-year IMPACT Vision for Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) in Northern Ireland (2024-2029) include, promoting trust, equity, advocacy and timely access to care. The development of an ethical decision-making framework has been identified as key to delivery of the strategic priorities of AHPs in NI. ‘DECISION’ Framework: An Ethical Decision-making Framework for AHPs in NI’ has been developed through widespread consultation with AHPs, PPI, Regulators and AHP leaders from across all sectors.
The purpose of this document is to introduce an ethical framework to assist AHPs in decision making whilst navigating complex ethical situations within their roles. This development has been achieved through a review of relevant literature as well as actively engaging with the views and experiences of AHPs throughout this process. The framework has a primary focus on supporting AHPs in delivering high-quality, evidence-based, and patient-centred care, by fostering openness, accountability, and collaboration. Utilisation of the framework will encourage shared decision-making, ensuring that ethical challenges are approached with professionalism, compassion, and integrity. Implementing effective processes and resources will help in improving outcomes for service users and AHPs health and well-being.
