Breastfeeding Action Plan 2026–2029

The Department of Health has launched the Northern Ireland Breastfeeding Action Plan 2026–2029[HA1] , which builds on the foundations and strategic direction of the previous breastfeeding strategy and sets out a clear, coordinated programme of action to improve breastfeeding outcomes for mothers, children and families for the next three years.
The Plan recognises breastfeeding as a key public health priority and aims to ensure women are informed, confident and supported to breastfeed for as long as they choose. It highlights the important role breastfeeding plays in giving every child the best start in life and supporting long-term health and wellbeing.
Developed with partners across health and social care, government, and the voluntary and community sectors, the plan aims to improve breastfeeding support, create more breastfeeding-friendly environments, and reduce inequalities. It will deliver targeted actions including enhanced staff training, expanded community support, public awareness initiatives, and measurable targets to increase breastfeeding rates.
