  • Reappointment of Non-Executive Chair and Non-Executive (Dental) Member to the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency

    Health Minister, Mike Nesbitt has announced the reappointment of the Non-Executive Chair and a Non-Executive (Dental) Member to the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency (NIMDTA).

    Derek Wilson has been reappointed as the Non-Executive Chair and Hall Graham as the Non-Executive (Dental) Member. Both reappointments will commence on 1 October 2025 and will end on a date not later than 30 September 2029.

    NIMDTA Chair position attracts a remuneration of £16,221 with a time commitment of 4 days per month. NIMDTA Non-Executive Member positions attract a remuneration of £3,493 per annum with a time commitment of 20 days per year.

    These reappointments are made in accordance with the Code of Practice issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments for Northern Ireland.

    NIMDTA commissions, promotes and oversees postgraduate medical and dental education and training throughout Northern Ireland. Its role is to attract and appoint individuals of the highest calibre to recognised training posts and programmes to ensure the provision of a highly competent medical and dental workforce with the essential skills to meet the changing needs of the population and health and social care in Northern Ireland.

    The NIMDTA Board is made up of a Chair and 5 Non-Executive Members.

    Notes to editors:

    1. Derek Wilson spent nearly four decades as a banker, latterly specialising in managing mortgage businesses.  Prior to retiring from full time private sector roles, he moved into the public and voluntary sectors, having served for ten years on the Board of NIHE between 2015 and 2025. Derek now holds a range of public appointments: Parades Commissioner with a fixed annual remuneration of £22,000 and a time commitment of 1 - 2 days per week, Governing Body member of SERC with a remuneration of £250 for a governing body meeting and £150 for a committee meeting with a time commitment of approximately one day per month and Board Member of the Agri-Foods and Biosciences Institute, which attracts remuneration of £436 per day and requires a time commitment of 20 days per annum.  He also chairs the Co-Ownership Housing Association. Derek has extensive governance and risk management experience, serving on a number of audit and risk committees, past and present.
    2. Hall Graham graduated from QUB Dental School in 1982, having been awarded a BDS. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Glasgow in 1985 and completed a Masters in Dental Public Health in University College London in 2007. Hall worked in the Belfast Dental School from 1982 to 1987 and in General Dental Practice from 1987 – 2002. In 2002 he became a Dental Advisor in the Eastern Board and in 2007 was appointed as a Primary Care Advisor and Assistant Director in RQIA. He retired from RQIA in 2018 but remains a member of bank staff acting as an advisor to the RQIA Review Programme. Hall was a dental member of the GDC Fitness to Practise Panel from 2015-2025 and is currently a Lay Member of the NI Solicitors’ Complaints and Disciplinary panels
    3. Appointments to the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency are made with the approval of the Health Minister.
    4. All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, the Commissioner for Public Appointments for Northern Ireland requires the political activity of appointees to be published. Both appointees have declared that they have not engaged in any political activity in the last five years.
