Queen’s University Honour Deputy Chief Medical Officer

Queens University Belfast has conferred the title of Honorary Professor of Practice on Dr Lourda Geoghegan, Lourda is currently one of the Department’s two Deputy Chief Medical Officers.

Professor Geoghegan has received this award in recognition of her significant leadership and sustained contribution to the development of public health and medical practice in Northern Ireland.

Welcoming the announcement Permanent Secretary at the Department of Health Peter May said: “This award is a well-deserved acknowledgement of outstanding leadership provided by Professor Geoghegan over recent years. In her role as Deputy Chief Medical Officer Lourda played a key role in both the Department’s and the HSC system’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“As a doctor and senior professional adviser Lourda continues to provide medical leadership and public health expertise across a range of important programmes in the Department. Her steadfast commitment to supporting high quality medical education and to continually developing our public health system and its workforce is unwavering.”

Professor Pascal McKeown, of Queen’s added: “My colleagues and I are delighted that Lourda has been appointed as an Honorary Professor of Practice. She has expertise in the science and art of effective public health policy making and will assist us with the ongoing review, development and implementation of our teaching, research and impact strategies, with a particular focus on public health policy development.”

Professor Lourda Geoghegan said: “I am absolutely delighted to receive this award from Queen’s University Belfast, one of the leading academic centres for medical and public health teaching and research in the world. I look forward to working closely with the University over the coming years, to supporting and equipping our doctors and our public health practitioners as they plan and deliver increasingly complex care at a time of significant service change.”
