  • Consultation opens on NI Clinical Excellence Awards

    Date published: 21 November 2023

A consultation has opened to seek views on reforming the Northern Ireland Clinical Excellence Awards scheme (NICEA).

Clinical Excellence Awards were introduced to recognise and reward exceptional personal contributions of individual doctors in Northern Ireland.

The scheme in Northern Ireland is currently paused to new entrants but existing recipients continue to be paid where applicable.

The Department has engaged with key stakeholders, including the British Medical Association and Health and Social Care Trusts, to help inform a revised scheme.

The overall aim is to introduce a new scheme which is affordable, has a fair and inclusive application process and rewards the highest-performing clinicians who go over and above the standards expected of them.

The proposals put forward also include an option to broaden access to the scheme to include other senior medical staff within the HSC. We would therefore encourage everyone with an interest to respond to this consultation.

The consultation runs until 13 February 2024.

    Notes to editors:

    1. The consultation can be accessed on the Department website.
    2. The Northern Ireland Clinical Excellence Awards scheme was suspended in 2011 as a result of the pay freeze for all public sector staff in the Northern Ireland at that time.
