Appointment of a Non-Executive Director to the Public Health Agency for Northern Ireland

Health Minster Robin Swann, has announced the appointment of a Non-Executive Director to the Public Health Agency for Northern Ireland (PHA).

Craig Blaney’s Non-Executive (Local Government Rep) Director appointment commenced on 01 August 2022 and will end on a date not later than 31 July 2026.

The Non-Executive Director position attracts an annual remuneration of

£9,678 with a time commitment of 5 days per month.

These appointments are made in accordance with the Code of Practice issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments for Northern Ireland.

The Public Health Agency was established in 2009 and is a multi-disciplinary, professional body with a strong regional and local presence. It has four key functions, health and social well-being improvement, health protection, public health support to commissioning and policy development and HSC research.

  1. Mr Blaney is the owner of Airtight Creative, where he works to advise businesses and guide them through the development of their strategic plans and supports the implementation of their long and short term goals. He is also the Deputy Mayor of Ards and North Down Borough Council and is Member of both the Regeneration and Corporate Committee’s. These roles involve attending and contributing to meetings and implementing these actions to ensure excellence and improvements in service for his constituents. Mr Blaney is a Board Member of the Northern Community Leisure Trust where he oversees the work of the management agent. Oversight and governance are key components of this role.  Mr Blaney also sits on the YMCA Board for North Down where he supports the CEO and executive staff to help implement the vision and values of the organisation.   
  2. Appointments to PHA are made with the approval of the Health Minister.
  3. All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, the Commissioner for Public Appointments for Northern Ireland requires the political activity of appointees to be published.  Mr Blaney is a Member of the Ulster Unionist Party, having served as the Secretary of the North Down Ulster Unionist Association for 1 year.  He was elected as a Member of Ards and North Down Borough Council for the UUP in 2019, going on to serve over three years in the role. Mr Blaney is now the Deputy Mayor of Ards and North Down Borough Council and canvassed for himself in the last election.
