Proposed changes to the Pharmaceutical Services Regulations (NI) 1997

Summary

The Department of Health is proposing to make two amendments to the Pharmaceutical Services Regulations (NI) 1997. This legislation governs the provision of Health Service community pharmaceutical services in Northern Ireland. The amendments are required to ensure that the Regulations are consistent with UK legislation and with the wider HSC policy position.

Consultation description

The attached consultation document sets out the background to the proposed amendments, which will:

  • permit registered therapeutic radiographers to independently prescribe medicines
  • provide for registered dieticians to enter into supplementary prescribing arrangements
  • include provisions in the Terms of Service to clarify that pharmacy contractors (or their staff) may refuse to provide pharmaceutical services to a person who is violent, threatens violence, commits or threatens to commit a criminal offence
  • enable pharmacy contractors (or their staff) to refuse to supply pharmaceutical services if anyone accompanying the person seeking pharmaceutical services is violent, threatens violence, commits or threatens to commit a criminal offence
