HSC research and development (R&D)

The current strategy for Health and Social Care Research and Development is aligned to five strategic priorities.

Strategic priorities

The current strategy for Health and Social Care Research and Development is aligned to five strategic priorities:

  • developing an enabling infrastructure to support R&D
  • building research capacity for R&D
  • funding R&D
  • supporting innovation as a means of transferring R&D findings into practice
  • ensuring patient and public involvement in R&D

A new Research and Development Strategy is being developed. A public consultation on this closed recently.

Delivery of the strategy is the responsibility of the Director of Research & Development.

Currently that post, the holder of which is also Chief Scientific Advisor to DHSSPS, is vacant.

The Director of R&D also works alongside the R&D Division of the Public Health Agency through which the Northern Ireland funding for HSC R&D  is managed.

The HSC R&D Division website can be accessed at www.research.hscni.net
